MR. RUSSELL KINGSLEY




Sadly, our fellow classmate, Mary Kingsley, has lost her Daddy. And the rest of us have lost one of our former teachers.

Below is Mr. Kingsley's obituary as published on the Elliott Mortuary website:

Russell Kingsley, 97, died peacefully on Nov. 12, 2014, at Thorne Care Center, Hutchinson. He was born Nov. 28, 1916, in Windom, to John and Mary (Altenread) Kingsley of Windom.

He graduated from Windom Rural High School in 1935, McPherson College in 1939, and received his Master's Degree from Oklahoma State in Industrial Education in 1947. Russell taught and coached at Smolan High School from 1939 to 1942 and moved to Hutchinson in 1942. He taught Industrial Education until retiring in 1980. For the last 10 years he was a supervisor of the Industrial Education shops in the Hutchinson school system. Many people in the Hutchinson area were members of his adult night classes learning how to repair and construct new furniture. He took a personal interest in both his high school and night school students. He was grateful to his former students for their friendship throughout his life. During WWII, Russell spent two years in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific on the U.S.S. Hope and the U.S.S. Comfort as an Ensign. He also served as a Communication Officer and received his communication training from Harvard University. He was a life member of National Teachers Association, a member of Iota Lambdra Sigma Industrial Arts Honor Fraternity of Oklahoma State, Kansas Officials Association, served multiple terms on the Wesley Towers Board of Directors, a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Trinity United Methodist Church, Methodist Men, and American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68 for 60 years.

He married Neoma Nordling of McPherson in 1940. She passed away in 1947. He married Helen Blythe on Dec. 26, 1948, in White City, Kan. She preceded him in death on Sept. 23, 2012. Russell is survived by: children, Dr. Larry Kingsley and wife Betty of St. Petersburg, Fla., Mary Kingsley of Kansas City, Mo., John Kingsley and wife Gail of Lenexa; grandchildren, Karen Shudolink and husband Mike of Eagle, Colo., Kevin Kingsley and wife Elisha of St. Petersburg, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Scott and Jack Shudolink, Logan and Killian Kingsley; sister-in-law, Catherine Kingsley of Tulsa, Okla.; and brother-in-law, John Blythe of Manhattan; and many nieces, nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Kingsley.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, with Reverend Michael McGuire officiating. Burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014, at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson, with military graveside honors being conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday, with family to receive friends from 5 t o 7 p.m., at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
