Sadly, very sadly, Coach Alpers has left the building. Here is the obituary for Warren E. "Whitey" Alpers as published on the Elliott Mortuary website:

Warren "Whitey" Alpers, 81, died Jan. 7, 2017, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born Jan. 18, 1935, in Great Bend, the son of Clarence and Vera (Brensing) Alpers.

Whitey was a teacher and coach from 1963-1995 at Hutchinson High School.

On June 10, 1956, he married Shirley Stapp in Hays. She survives. Other survivors include: two sons, Mike (Carla) of Emporia and Todd (Jennifer) of Stafford; five grandchildren, Chris (Crystal) of Olathe, Eric (Meghan) of Olathe, Luke, Sam, and Anna of Stafford; three great-grandchildren, Mikayla, Michael, and Cameron of Olathe; brother, Marion (Juanita) of Hudson; nephews and nieces, Kevin (Barb), Janell (Reuel) Foote, Diana (Neal) Leven, Greg (Jody), Brad, Doug (Dani); numerous great nieces and great nephews; and stepsister, Arlene Williams and her children, Victoria and Carlon. He was preceded in death by: his parents; stepmother, Reitha (VanGelder) Alpers; and brother, Burnell "Doc" Alpers.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 17th and Main, Hutchinson, with the Reverends Michael L. McGuire and Jim Rhaesa officiating. The family will greet friends following the service. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. at Trinity Cemetery, Hudson, with Pastor Wade Russell officiating. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary. The casket will remain closed.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army or Hospice and Homecare of Reno County, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
